2015 New Rochelle Community Snapshot

In continuation of our second annual Community Snapshot series, today we’re releasing a new 2015 snapshot for New Rochelle [NOTE: We have updated the snapshot since the original post date.]. Yesterday, we shared the 2015 Yonkers Community Snapshot, and over the course of the next week and a half, we’ll also release snapshots for Mount Vernon, White Plains, Ossining, Port Chester, and Peekskill.

2015 New Rochelle Community Snapshot

We’d like to point out a few interesting parts of the 2015 New Rochelle Community Snapshot, especially in comparison to last year’s New Rochelle Snapshot:

• [UPDATED] From 2014 to 2015, the New Rochelle Public School District saw declines in its Mathematics proficiency rates for both third and eighth grade.  HOWEVER, the eighth grade math proficiency rate is extremely misleading, since eighth graders taking advanced math classes now have the option of taking the Regents math test INSTEAD OF the standard eighth grade math test.  This means that students who would have normally passed the standard test are now taking ANOTHER test instead.  On the English Language Arts (ELA) exams, there was no difference in the proficiency rate for third graders, and one percentage point decline for eighth graders.
  [OLD VERSION: From 2013 to 2014, the district saw improvements in its Mathematics proficiency rates for both third and eighth grade. On the English Language Arts (ELA) exams, however, third graders performed slightly worse than the previous year’s cohort, while the eighth grade ELA proficiency rate stayed the same.]
• The percentage of students with limited proficiency in the English language ticked up slightly from 9% to 10%.
• Like Yonkers, New Rochelle’s graduation rate decreased slightly (by about 6 percentage points). However, the district’s college readiness rate held steady at 36%.
• This year, New Rochelle became the first Westchester community to accept President’s Obama My Brother’s Keeper challenge. So far, no other communities in the county have signed on, but we hope to see more following New Rochelle’s lead in supporting youth, especially young men of color.
