White Plains City Snapshot

Today we’re sharing a White Plains City Snapshot, the fourth fact sheet in our City Snapshots Series. If you missed the first three City Snapshots for YonkersNew Rochelle, and Mount Vernon, be sure to check them out. Next week, we’ll share the final City Snapshot in the series (Peekskill).

Our goal is to shed some light on what it’s like to raise a child in each of these cities in Westchester County. The data we’ve chosen covers key areas such as demographics, economics, education, community resources, health and safety, and family. While there is much more data that we could have included, we think the data we’ve chosen provides a well-rounded picture of the environments that our children and youth are developing in. All the City Snapshots will contain the same data indicators for comparisons between cities.

You can download a pdf of the White Plains City Snapshot or use the interactive viewing window below.

White Plains Highlights

NOTE: Unless otherwise noted, all comparisons are made between the five selected cities, not between all municipalities in Westchester County.
  • Walkability: White Plains has the highest walkability score out of the five cities, earning the designation of “Walker’s Paradise.” This means that daily errands do not require a car.
  • Student proficiency rates: White Plains also has the highest passing rates for eighth grade English Language Arts and Math and third grade English Language Arts. White Plains also has the highest high school graduation and college readiness rates out of the cities selected for this series.
  • Suspension rate: Only 3% of White Plains students received a suspension in the 2011-2012 school year, the lowest suspension rate out of the five cities.
  • Monthly housing costs: Renters in White Plains spend more than renters in the other five cities, with a median monthly housing cost of $1,361.
  • Unemployment rate: A smaller percentage of residents (6%) are unemployed in White Plains than in the other four cities.
  • Infant birth weight: Along with New Rochelle, White Plains had the lowest percentage of infants who were born underweight out of the five cities (8%).
  • Child obesity: Out of the five cities, White Plains tied with Yonkers for the lowest percentage of children who are obese or over-weight (34%). Throughout Westchester County as a whole, 26% of children are obese or overweight.
  • Real G.I.R.L.S. AcademyG.I.R.L.S. stands for Grace, Intelligence, Leadership, Respect, and Skills. This program, a collaboration between the White Plains Youth Bureau and White Plains School District, helps fifth and sixth grade girls develop positive qualities. In addition, a component of the program encourages parental involvement in their children’s development.

Take some time to explore the rest of the data in the White Plains City Snapshot below. We also encourage you to download the fact sheet as a reference, or send it to a friend or colleague using the share buttons at the bottom of the post.
